Women are not guilty of anything for being born female.
But only a percentage of the world agrees with this statement. ^
So I wrote a news-brief-poem,
To tell a story in a different way,
A story you've heard a million times,
Of a woman being violated for what she is wearing.
A woman goes to a matatu stage in Nairobi,
She is wearing a tank top and mini-skirt,
She is stripped naked because her outfit “was asking for it."
A video is released online and it goes viral.
This occurs two days after “International Men’s Liberation Day”,
A day for East African men to boycott sex with women,
Because “They are taking over the world.”
Monday morning the radio broadcast sounded like this:
“It’s a protest against rising violence against men
…Increased drug and alcohol abuse by women
...The government is investing 2 billion for sanitary towels
and not even half for the circumcision of men
...Women should be banned from Parliament
…Dressing like this is un-African
…blame Hillary Clinton.”
So Kenyan men and women respond today by rallying,
To support women’s right to wear whatever they want,
Be whatever they want,
And denounce the Men’s Liberation Movement,
Because #MyDressMyChoice.
And my freakin two X chromosomes, my life.
